Applications of Fibre Optic Technology

Fibre optic technology is an amazing technology that has become much more accessible today than it was a few years ago. The fundamental principle behind it is it works by transmitting light signals through an optic fibre. In the simplest terms, fibre optic technology converts light signals into electric signals.

Fibre optic based communications have a wide scope of applications. It can be used in any context where data needs to be transferred in a fast, secure and efficient manner. Optic fibre broadband is becoming more widespread today thanks to the advance in this technology. A simple broadband comparison should show that fibre optic connections are much faster than cable connections.

Optic based intranet is used widely among many corporate and company offices. Fibre optic technology is ideal for sending data across large distances. Since it has a high bandwidth, it is perfect for broadband and other signals requiring high bandwidth, such as high definition television signals. Telephone connections can also work on fibre optic technology.

Optic fibres are extremely thin strands made of an optically pure material, which is usually glass but can also be plastic. These strands carry information in the form of light signals. A bundle consisting of thousands of optic fibres make one optical cable.

There are some obvious benefits to this technology over other conventional modes of transmitting data. Optic fibres are safer as there is no electricity and thus no hazard. They have a smaller loss of data which translates into a higher quality signal.
